Queer fat femme. Fat fashion bargain hunting. Living in Chicago.
A reader wrote in to ask what one would wear on a date in cold weather. They said they tend to like a mix of tough and sweet. This is what I came up with.
On the left: I know this leather skirt isn’t super cheap, but it’s not too bad price-wise and could be worn SO many ways. I like it paired with a soft oversized sweater that would show some cleavage, cute patterned tights and some platform ankle boots (these boots also come in nude and black and they’re only $44!!!).
The earrings shown can go with both outfits easily.
On the right: More of a casual date outfit - but skinny black jeggings paired with a loose stripey cardigan is such an easy and fun look. The fringe necklace and red boots really make it trendy and cute. Could also be paired with scrunch black boots.
Of course living in a cold climate means you’re going to have to wear a giant jacket and scarf over all of it - but that is addressed in other posts.
Plus size topFinding a plus size coat can be a challenge, especially in stores, but there are some stores I can recommend for in-person shopping and online! I love being able to try coats on so I can make sure they’ll provide the coverage I want. I prefer a wool coat for most of the winter, but there are some Chicago days that really require something super thick like a puffer jacket and snow boots. I personally love coats that have some special details - whether it’s a pretty waistline detail or some unusual situation going on with the neck. And of course my favorite way to really mix things up for the winter is with accessories (scarves/gloves/hats), but I’ll be posting something separate for that.
Macys has a great selection both in store and online. They don’t allow for importing on polyvore, so I’ve linked some examples below.
Calvin Klein Plus Toggle Hooded Coat Size 0X-3X
Dollhouse Faux Fur Coat Size 1X-3X Calvin Klein Plus Faux Fur Size 0X-3X
If you’re on the smaller end of plus size, Old Navy and Target can be an option. They’ve both got selections in the straight size line up to about a size 16/18. Additionally I can recommend in store shopping at the following stores which tend to have a well-stocked plus size section: JC Penny, Nordstrom, Dillards, and some of the discount stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls (if you feel like digging around).
Also for those of us that live in VERY cold climates, I can highly recommend Lands End. They’ve got a great selection of VERY WARM coats in extended sizes. But they stop at size 3X.
For my readers that are over size 3x, there are some great coats at Woman Within up to size 40 and LLBean has sizes up to 26
